THE MASK

The Inner Child screams out in pain,
The World sees nothing as it hides in vain.
Smiling all day and into the night,
while deep inside is nothing but fright.
Fear of rejection, of being alone,
never having anyone, to call my own.
“You shouldn’t get upset”…
“Don’t let it show”…
Hiding emotions, so no one will know.

Laughing out loud, I burst into tears,
Have I found someone, finally, who hears?
Opens the door, lets it all out…
calms the fears and softens the doubts.

Pain of the ages, kept deep inside,
not allowed to show, the suffering about.
Hard to contain, yet The Mask is in place,
will anyone ever see, my One True Face?
