First Hunger

Katya moaned as the light of the moon brushed across her closed eyes.
The feel of silk against her breasts and cheek.
The scent of wine and roses in the air.
The sound of wind through the trees outside.
But no heart beat in her body, no sigh of breath parted her lips.

She knew it would be like this. There would be changes, after the searing, tearing pain. Tears had coursed down her porcelain cheeks and silent screams torn her throat as she felt every cell in her body die. The crushing suffocation as her heart forgot to beat, her lungs forgot to breathe, then nothing.

Now there was this…emptiness…deep and wailing loss…and hunger. Hunger that destroyed the world, obliterating all but itself. There was nothing else. Her mind slipped beneath it. Nothing could ever assuage it. It would define her, as it did all her kind.

Katya’s eyes flew open when she heard the door. Saw the shadow of a man across the threshold carrying a limp form. Heard the steady heartbeat. Caught the scent of blood just beneath the skin.
As she lunged across the room, a crimson tear fell from her eye.
Now this was all there was…all there would ever be….
Just heself….her lover….and the hunger…
…forever.
