Artist's Description

The Vincent Comet was designed and built at the Vincent works in Great North Road, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England.

The 499 cc single-cylinder high-camshaft OHV, air-cooled Vincent engine had a light alloy barrel and cylinder head with a cast-iron liner, ‘backbone’ type combined frame and oil tank, the engine acting as a stressed member of the frame, and most other components in common with the post-war twin-cylinder models.

I first met George Brown in 1974 when I bought my first motorcycle from his shop. Over the next few years he took the micky over my choice of motorcycles (including the one I had bought from him!). That all changed in September 1976 when I arrived outside his shop on a Ducati 250 Mk 3. He walked out of the shop had a good look at my new bike and declared “you got a real bike now boy”. Over the next few months he gave me some sound advice and sold me a new Pirelli front tyre at a discount price. This was a great improvement and made the bike handle extremely well round corners. Unfortunately in early 1977 I had a serious accident and did not get back onto the road again until 1980 and as a result of this I never got to see him again before he died in 1979.
