Pieces of You

What am I doing out here?
It’s cold, and the wind is blowing dust in my eyes.
The loose dirt, stirred up by the wind
Is moving like a living thing ahead of me down the road.

What has brought me out here?
I stopped in front of the old house, still there after all these years,
And though someone else lives there now,
For me it’s still our place, filled with memories of what we shared.

Will I find you out here?
It’s the only place I really feel connected to you
If I can’t find you here, I won’t find you anywhere,
But there’s nothing here except a mournful sound on the wind.

You’re gone now, passed from this world
Your ashes scattered to the four winds.
But I have pieces of you to hold on to
Mysteries and memories, music and faded letters…

I thought we’d have more time to sort it all out,
To make amends, to heal old wounds…
That time is past, now, blown away like the dirt in the road
I’m left behind to solve our mysteries on my own.
