baby down the stairs

there’s an old man in a metal folding chair
leaning there against the building
is he waiting for me?
waiting, watching, gleaning
all the things he is able to see
as we walk by he speaks to me
where’s your pride, girl?
ain’tcha got no pride?

bump bump bump
i guide the stroller down the stairs
there’s a little boy sitting there
he babbles and coos and his nonsensical syllables
make more sense to me than you do
you follow along behind me
you just keep talking away
words you’ve held back for so long
the words would have hurt me back then, you say
but the words have hurt me now just the same
bump bump bump
baby down the stairs
while the stranger looks after me
how does he know?
how does he see?

and when we go around the corner
i look back to the old man in the folding chair
i admire how easily he holds himself there
i think, why does he even care?
and then i walk away
he’s been gone ten years now
but i still see him leaning there
in the quiet middle of my nights
he still speaks to me
where’s your pride, girl?
ain’tcha got no pride?
