the Baron

i haven’t the power
nor you the strength or desire
to put an end to the nightmare
so i seek relief in another woman’s wages
there’s diversion somewhere
within these frivolous pages
amid the brooding French castles
with their rugged heroes and well bred ladies
it’s here i return with evening’s last light
for the solace you no longer provide
and i lose myself in her troubles for a while
her nightmare i know will turn out quite right
for the man within these pages, now
a word from him would change my plight!
and in the pages of this book it does not matter
if you are not here
in these pages it does not matter
the darkness from which your lies transpire
for the Baron started out cold and aloof
like you and yes, a liar too
but he seems to have a better writer than you
and in his world the ending will go the way his author wants it to
if only i could write my own chapter and verse!
then you would do only as i wanted too
but eventually i will have to close the book
and accept what has become a cold hard truth:
that only in a Harlequin fiction
will you ever be chivalrous and true
and in my heart i wonder
who is the real caricature?
the Baron
or you?
