Vichyssoise

“Please, sweetie,” he pleaded, “do it for me."
“No, I can’t stand her. I’m not going to sit there and pretend I do.”
“It means so much to be seen with the Mayor. Let your grudge go for one night.”
“If I go, I’m going to dump a bowl of vichyssoise over her head. How good would that be for your political career?”
But she was trapped and she knew it. And it would not do for the wife of an aspiring politician to drench the Mayor in potato soup at her own gala, even if the Mayor was a snarky backbiting social climber who deserved it.
She would restrain herself.

Later, when the police were escorting her out, she tried to catch her husband’s eye. His political career was over, true, but she knew her old friend the Mayor would finally have to agree…revenge is best served up cold.
