Tick Tick

The tick tick of toenails was coming closer. I heard them scraping across the dining room floor, growing louder, and I knew no one would get to me in time.
Desperate to avoid detection, I lay motionless on the bed. Slowly, I stretched my free arm over the heavy white casts confining my legs, looking for some way to protect myself. A magazine fell off the bed and hit the floor with a thud. I cursed inwardly and braced myself for the impact as I heard four feet thundering down the hallway, picking up speed until suddenly-
She sprang.
Fourteen pounds of wiggling, licking, tail-wagging puppy landed right in the middle of my bandaged chest, her tongue in my face, wet willies in my ear, and in an exasperated mixture of giggles and pain I called out for the umpteenth time,
“Will somebody please get the dog out of here??!”
