moving day

somehow we must sort out our memories
as if we were simply
cleaning out a musty closet
filled with mementos of times long gone
times far away
that never lost their meaning for us
keep this one
toss that one out
that one too
as if we are moving our memories
to a smaller home
trim the excess away
this one goes
that one stays….
someday
when my heart is wholly given away
to someone else
i will be able to gather all i felt for you
the good and the not so good
into one neat pile
i’ll tie it up sweetly
with the memory
of the dozens of i love you’s
that fell from our lips
and all that i lost will be regained
relocated in my memory to a safer place
where bliss and torment mingle together…
a safe haven for yesterday
tomorrow
in the mind of a once again sane woman

moving day

Artist's Description

i found this poem in an old journal
i wrote it almost 25 years ago
it’s message is much clearer to me now
than it was then…….
