Since European settlement in Australia, there has been wide-ranging analysis on what constitutes a collective Australian identity. However, less emphasis has been placed on the identity of the nation’s major cities. In my thesis I explore current perspectives on place and identity and the nature of their relationship, and use five places nominated by contemporary Sydney residents to illustrate how narratives of place function in determining aspects of Sydney’s identity. The thesis applies an ethnographic methodology and several research methods – interviews, a visual (photographic) study presented as an accompanying book, ‘Outside’, and historical/archival research. In particular, the notion of ‘the Outsider’ is discussed as an emergent theme from the five places that form the focus of the analysis.
