A Modest Proposal

Yes it’s true; a little act such as planting a tree can dramatically affect the entire world. Planting a tree could solve a few major problems everyone faces each day. These include pollution, depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, obesity, and the economy.
Pollution has been a problem since the industrial revolution in the 18th century. It is approximated that 300-500 million tons of pollution are created each year. Pollution destroys the ecosystem and is the cause of the many diseases people face today. Pollution is the cause of lung disease, cancer, and various cardiovascular diseases. In India alone, there are as many as 5 million deaths in a year because of air pollution. Since the time humanity first began polluting everything, the only true way to clean air has been through trees. Trees help convert carbon dioxide to oxygen through photosynthesis. According to a group of biologists that did a study on photosynthesis, “an old Beech tree exposes about 200,000 leaves with a total surface to 1200 square meters. During the course of one sunny day such a tree inhales 9,400 liters of carbon dioxide to produce 12 kilograms of carbohydrate, thus liberating 9,400 liters of oxygen. Through this mechanism about 45,000 liters of air are regenerated which is sufficient for the respiration of 2 to 3 people". Every tree that is planted contributes to these figures and the overall solution to the world’s problems.
Global warming has also plagued this generation’s politics, news, and overall well-being. Because of increased usage of electricity and fuels, the world is getting about 9% warmer every decade. Scientists are increasingly perplexed over the issue as the temperature gets warmer year by year. The major factor causing global warming has been the depletion of the ozone layer caused by the burning of fossil fuels and pollution. Lack of an ozone layer gives way for penetration of UV rays which are detrimental to human health, marine life, and agriculture. Again, the perfect solution to global warming and ozone depletion is trees. By planting more trees, people can eliminate all uses of electricity and fossil fuels both of which are the main cause of the problem. By abandoning the uses of electricity and fossil fuels completely, people can provide their own source of energy through the wood that would be planted abundantly.
Instead of being optimistic, people often scoff at the above solution. What would all the industries do without electricity and fuel? How would cars run without fuel or electricity? How would TVs and computers run? This is where the rest of the proposal comes together. In response to those who are concerned about the economy, the government could get all the workers who previously worked at pollution causing companies (most companies) to run tree farms. In order to create enough trees to eliminate fuel, electricity, and pollution, we would need thousands of people to work at tree farms. Instead of working in stuffy buildings, the workers could work outside planting trees and breathing the fresh air they helped produce. In addition, automobiles would not be able to run without fuel or electricity. Therefore, people could walk or ride bikes instead. And why not? Obesity has become an overwhelming problem especially within the United States. In the US alone, it is reported that 101 million people are obese to the point of disease; while about 78% of Americans are not getting the exercise needed. Obesity would be eliminated if fuel and electricity were not available. As for TV and other forms of entertainment involving electricity, those forms of entertainment usually involve long hours with no exercise. Why waste the time and money to become obese and diseased? Planting a tree would be a better form of leisure activity.
In addition to a decrease in pollution, obesity, and global warming, planting a tree involves many other benefits. These include shading and cooling, wind reduction, and prevention of soil erosion. Without relying on oil as a fuel, the United States would also be able to promote world peace by settling the conflicts in the Middle Eastern over gasoline. In addition, trees improve the outdoors view and will make the environment much more enjoyable. By planting a tree, you can save the world from pollution, obesity, global warming, the economy, and promote world peace. So go be a tree farmer today and plant a tree!

Something I wrote a long time ago for English class. It’s a parody of “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift. and obviously I’m not serious. The statistics are probably very different by now too. Anyway, this is just for amusement so don’t take it too seriously. :]
