Birthday

My fifth birthday. I thought i looked so beautiful, like one of those characters in a T.V. show that had to be ten years older than i was turning. The family atmosphere didn’t matter to me, i still insisted on dressing up. We didn’t go to church often and being only a preschooler the act of getting into a dress with pretty white shoes was like a dream come true. My grandparents, Amy (my aunt), my first friend ,who to this day i still could not tell you her nor her brother’s name, and my mom were there. I don’t know who took the picture that highlights that january evening, but that is all think of when my brithday comes ‘round. My mom is hunched over me her face tight with lips puckered ready to blew the five candles away. I’m there in my purple sundress and white shoes. My legs are bent onto the chair. Everyone made it dark inside the apartment so that the candles lit nothing but me and my mom’s faces. That’s my favorite birthday. Maybe it wasn’t my favorite, but it obivously meant something because i can still to this day remember how my stomach dropped to my toes and the fleeting impression gave way as i blew out all five candles. It’s nice, you know, just having that kind of memory where all you remember is purely bliss.
