Artist's Description

Located in the Bay of Islands area of the North Island, Russell (Kororareka) was an established native settlement long before Captain Cook arrived in the area in 1769.

From the early 1800’s whalers used it as a provisioning port and the town grew to support this and, along the way, gained a reputation as a rough and lawless place and earned the nickname “Hellhole of the Pacific”. Today it still fills a role as a provisioning base, but now for pleasure craft.

Over the years it has had a quite a history, it was the first capital city of NZ (Okiato or Old Russell), it was sacked by the forces of Hone Heke and Kawiti, it was a major provisioning and refitting port for whaling ships. Later manganese
mining, fish-canning and coal brought steady prosperity to the area and by the early 1900’s Russell become known as a quiet historic town.

Today Russell supports strong tourism, fishing, oyster-farming and cottage industries that provide much of the employment for the towns population of about 1000.
