chapter 1

He read the book again last night in the half light of the old bedside lamp.

It had only just arrived in the mail a few days before, the result of an ebay purchase that one of his workmates had transacted on his behalf. And whilst it had only arrived a few days ago, that first chapter had been on his mind consistently since then. It had been on his mind primarily because he had read it 8 times. He could not go past it. Chapter two beckoned with wanton allure but he could not break off his preoccupation, indeed his devotion to chapter 1.

The book was heavy in his hands as he read it in the half light of the dusty old bedside lamp. It was not a large book in the scheme of things but it did strike him as heavy that night. He read with his earmuffs on whilst she watched the programme about fat people. He had nothing against fat people but he preferred to read at this time of the night. She cackled occasionally and some of this noise breached the sanctuary of his industrial strength earmuffs. He didn’t mind.

At breakfast she told him about the shows she had watched the previous night after he had gone to sleep. He listened politely but when she was finished he found he could not tell her anything at all about chapter 1.
