Once a year fresh water currents from the Orinoco River in Venezuela reach even the Tobago Cays and provoke the algae to bloom and turn the normally turquoise waters into a dark emerald green color and fluffy bright green algae starts to grow everywhere. This phenomena lasts between 2-4 weeks.
