Artist's Description

“Approach to Kilham”
Original watercolour by Glenn Marshall
30” x 22”
Painted on Saunders Waterford 140lb CP paper with Winsor & Newton artists paints

I wanted to do a painting of the archetypal Wolds village so this, although very closely based on the approach to Kilham from Woldgate, is a tribute to all the lovely villages scattered about this unspoiled part of Yorkshire. Clustered around its old church it is so typical of these quiet places. But don’t be fooled by the leafy lanes and extensive hedgerows because these villages are home to thriving communities. They can also boast some surprising history. Kilham, for example, was once a major Roman settlement on the direct road to Eboracum (York) so has been inhabited for many centuries. It’s well worth a little wander today before heading out to the wide vistas of the Yorkshire Wolds.
