Artist's Description

Impressionistic, expressionistic, abstract rendering of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All of the symbolism, elements are present abstractly.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is greatly revered by Latin Americans. But the story is not told in its full meaning. One must go back to the beginning of the 15th century when the King of Portugal wanted the Catholic Pope to declare that the indigenous peoples of Central and South America were animals not human beings; thus, they could continue their slave trade and reject any concept of indigenous peoples right to their ancestral lands. Of course, animals cannot own land much lest hold title to those lands. The Vatican was very week politically and economically so it caved in and issued a Papal Bull stating these indigenous peoples were indeed animals. The Portuguese slave trade of Latin American indigenous peoples went into high gear.
In 1531, Juan Diego, an Indian in Mexico had a vision, visitation, with Mary the mother of Jesus. She asked that a church be built in her name and it was. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in México City is the site of numberless pilgrimages. Having chosen an Indian of the Latin Americas, apparently the mother of Jesus did not agree with the Catholic church that that Latin American Indians were animals.
