A Weary Heart

I met her
By the lake
She wore my dead
Grandmother’s clothes
Her veins too apparent
She struggled to get comfortable
And when she did
She straightened her dress
And crossed her ankles gently
Fiddling her fingers upon
Her apron
Telling me of a pie
She was going to make
Her crooked hand then moving forward
To trace
Her name
Hearts
His name
Upon the wooden bench
And then as if someone had just whispered
Something marvelous into her ear
Her lips curved to a wondrous smile
As she changed into a
Lavender swimsuit
Diving in the water
For his affection
Her cherry eyes chasing him on the dock
And I sat mesmerized
Musing that even the weariest
Most abandoned heart can love deeply
Vividly filled to the brim
And perhaps more than my young heart
Can fathom
If ever and until then

A Weary Heart
