Artist's Description

The Modoc National Forest encompasses 1,654,392 acres in northeastern California. Most of the forest was covered by an immense lava flow millions of years ago.
Modoc National Forest contains the Medicine Lake Volcano, which has an elevation of 7,921 ft and is the largest shield volcano in North America.
“The Smiles of Gods” is what the Native Americans, who first settled this land, called it. The forest is named after the Native American tribe, the Modocs.
The Medicine Lake Highlands volcanic area exceeds 200 square miles in Modoc and Siskiyou counties, and takes in portions of three National Forests: Modoc, Klamath and Shasta/Trinity.
Modoc National Forest is located in the national forest’s Pacific Southwest Region (Region 5).
