Artist's Description

The Custer Gallatin National Forest encompasses 1,819,515 acres in south central Montana. The forest has portions of both the Absaroka-Beartooth and Lee Metcalf Wilderness areas within its boundaries. Gallatin National Forest is part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The forest is named after Albert Gallatin (1761–1849), U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and scholar of Native American languages and cultures. Custer-Gallatin National Forest includes the Beartooth Highway and the Capitol Rock and the Castles National Natural Landmarks.
Custer Gallatin National Forest is located in the national forest’s Northern Region (Region 1).
