Artist's Description

Lightships, like beacons, light buoys and lighthouses, were part of the coastal lights for the benefit of shipping.

For navigational reasons, lightships were anchored at a fixed position. They were equipped with a light tower with a powerful light source, a high-powered fog signal installation and a radio beacon. Lightships had a striking colour and shape. They were painted bright red with the name of the ship in white lettering. High masts carried the antennas of the radio beacon and the light tower, the so-called lighthouse.

Lightships were usually named after the bank for which they warned. Elsewhere in Europe lightships were used as a beacon in harbours or rivers. Since the position of a lightship was indicated on the nautical charts, it was very important that the ship maintained its prescribed position

To be seen in ANTWERP Bonaparte dock.
