Lament

Composition on a napkin,
the lowest paper,
breaking the purist of health,
soaking up more pen,
then required, by far.
Draining pen to keep dreaming,
some things, trickle away,
until, when absent, all gone.

Life’s curious factors
keep me far more interested
in regret,
than what it is, that lies ahead.

A hesitant step,
ruefully, unimpressed.
I die a little more each time
I regret for two
