Taking Down Animals

I am in the trade of taking down animals.
This night I get a call and grab my gear;
Not much, a rifle, night glasses, a snack
Or two. I travel with ease through the jungle of trees.

I spot the rhino walking, peaceful and grand.
Unaware of the danger lurking in the shadows,
A rustling is heard,
And suddenly everything is still and quiet.

The rhino turns and stares into the black;
Knowingly, while I breathe more slowly still,
I must not be noticed. My green eyes follow
The rhino’s head, he sees something there.

I must act fast, or it will be too late.
As with all hunting, the window is small
And the prize priceless.
I follow his eyes, and know he’s not looking.

I stand up, find my mark, and I shoot.
A bang! A cry! The poacher is dead.
