Artist's Description

We were walking along part of the West Highland Way, near the start in Milngavie Scotland, when a woman came bounding out from nowwhere out of the undergrowth. She spotted my camera and started to quickly and loudly advise me to take photos of a beautiful rare Scottish Orchid! which of course I couldn’t resist a request! Again, not being knowledgeable in these matters have had to relay on hear say……

These terrestrial orchids grow in basic soils in wet meadows, bogs, heathland and in areas sparsely populated by trees. They are tuberous geophytes. In a thickened underground stem, they can store a large amount of water to survive arid conditions.
