Artist's Description

This is the famous sphinx of Giza, Egypt. My husband and I were fortunate to be able to go on a cruise in (2008) that took us to the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea area. It was a short cruise (only 12 days) but it took us to several wondrous places that I had previously only read about and imagined. Giza is sort of a suburb of Cairo and the pyramids and the great sphinx are located just on the outskirts of Giza—within walking distance of the city, really. According to our local guide, the sphinx lost his nose to a shot by one of Napoleon’s soldiers and his beard, in some way that she didn’t explain, to the British. It apparently currently resides in the British Museum. But even without his nose and beard, the huge sphinx is very majestic. The little bit of a structure we glimpse behind the sphinx’s head is the largest of the three main pyramids located on this same site.
