Artist's Description

A fittingly striking spiral staircase leading away from the magnificent art in the Vatican Museums.

Extracted from the archives, dusted off and converted to mono.

It’s been a bit tricky trying to find information about this staircase – a common misconception seems to be that it was designed by ‘the’ Michelangelo, (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simon 1475-1564, the Italian Renaissance artist responsible for the Statue of David and Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes, amongst other things), and other information suggests it seems to have been designed by a different Michelangelo, Michelangelo Simonetti, an Italian architect from the Mid 18th century.

After further research I’m now more confident that it was actually Giuseppe Momo, a more contemporary Italian architect, who designed this staircase.
