Artist's Description

I can’t believe that I was stupid enough to get so close to the water’s edge. Not only was the area infested with monster salt water crocodiles, the river was rising at a very fast rate and really rushing over the causeway. But I was hell bent on getting a close up of that upturned vehicle and all else didn’t seem to matter!
The scene is at Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River where the Kakadu National Park links with Arnhem Land in Australia’s Northern Territory. This is the only road through so when it’s closed that’s it! During the wet season the people who live on the other side have to STAY on the other side – for up to 6 months at a time. This is REAL outback country.
This wasn’t the wet season but the river is tidal (high tide is about 8 hours behind Darwin roughly) and even heavy vehicles have come unstuck trying to run it with the result the rangers now post CLOSED signs and there are heavy penalties for anyone choosing to ignore them.
Magnificent country but whatever you do DON’T stand too close to the water’s edge!
As always I was hand holding my Sony DSC R1 in aperture priority on f8 and with the nd4 filter firmly attached to the lens, which would have been at about 90mm. ISO was 180
