Artist's Description

Built in 1860 this was the original Police Station, quarters and lock up for the town of New Norcia until 1900, when it became a residence for farm employees. The Thompson family lived here for 40 years followed by the Kelly’s for 30 years.
The thick stone walls are built in mud mortar, finished inside with mud and straw plaster, limewashed. The window frames are exposed on the outer face of the walls, surrounded by whitewashed box dressings, still visible on the eastern face of this building and in common with parts of the Monastery and Church. The steeply pitched roof was originally covered in timber shingles, which are still there under the present covering of corrugated iron
New Norcia is something like 150 kms north of Perth and is Australia’s only Monastic town..
