Artist's Description

Back in the really olden days of the Roman Empire, the Lupercian Festival was held in February to honour the god of Fertility. This gave young men the opportunity to choose a mate. The Emperor Claudius put an end to marriage, fearing that legions of men would refuse their duty to fight, instead hanging out with their wives. Strange blokes!

Catholic bishop Valentine, who had a grasp of such matters, (eh?) began to secretly marry couples. More correctly, to perform the marriage ceremony… When Claudius found out, he chucked a wobbly and ordered Valentine to be arrested and executed. Scary stuff!

While Valentine was waiting in jail, he began exchanging letters with the jailer’s daughter and soon fell in love with her – oh, foolish man! On the day that he was to be beheaded, he wrote one last note to her, sadly signing it: “From your Valentine.” Romantic, eh?

Send someone you love this card – but don’t lose your head over them!
