Artist's Description

This Sunflower will never appear in a bouquet or vase, amongst its more perfectly formed brothers and sisters, nor win any awards for its beauty. Its image will never hang in a Great Hall or Art Gallery. When the seeds ripen and become fecund, the petals shrivel and dry, it may have its head removed.

Here, just as Nature intended, this Sunflower is providing nurture. To the bee, gathering pollen for its honey – and helping to proliferate the species. To the spiders, giving them a network on the Sunflower Wide Web. To the Grasshopper, who has dined on leaves and petals. To other flying and crawling beasties, who may have done the same.

Finally, the Sunflower will surrender its ripened seeds to the birds of the air and to Man. He and his children will eat the health-giving seeds, cracking the shells between their teeth and extracting the sweet tasting kernels. He may well press them and make healthy oil from them. Some of the seeds he will plant, to grow more beautiful sunflowers, so that the cycle of life for all may continue.
