Artist's Description

Chief Mountain is in the state of Montana on the eastern border of Glacier National Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
It’s clearly seen from Montana and Alberta (Canada) because of it’s sudden rise of 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) over the Great Plains immediately east of the mountain. Though it’s mostly in Montana, the very distinctive eastern face, which resembles a gigantic billboard from a distance, is very easily seen over much of southern Alberta, especially on a clear day. It becomes much more hidden as one travels closer, especially going directly at it in a southerly direction.
Chief Mountain has been a sacred mountain to Native American tribes for hundreds of years, and has had various names. The Blackfoot name for the mountain is Ninastiko. White explorers in the late 18th century called it “Kings Peak” , then the Lewis and Clark Expedition, “Tower Mountain”. In the late 19th century it reverted to the Blackfeet naming of the mountain which was “Great Chief”.
Though we took many photos of the mountain, many of them had the top obscured with the distinctive plume of clouds. This one was reasonably clear.
