Artist's Description

Part of the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca Glacier is a major feature of the landscape almost at the junction of Jasper and Banff National Parks, Alberta, Canada, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
The glacier is approximately 6 km (3.75 miles) long, with an area of 6 km² (2.5 mi²), and is measured to be between 90 metres (270 ft) and 300 metres (1000 ft) thick. It is receding at a rate of 2 to 3 metres a year, and because of it’s proximity to the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff, it is the most visited glacier in North America.Looking carefully you can see the tiny figures of people clambering up the lower slopes, while in the centre of the photo there is a small rectangle which is actually a specially built “snow coach” which can take tourists most of the way up the lower tongue of the glacier.
