Hatley Estate is located in Colwood, part of Metro Victoria, Vancouver Island,British Columbia, Canada. The heart of the 500+ acre estate is Hatley Castle, a magnificent 40-room replica of a 15th. century Edwardian castle. It was built in 1908 for James Dunsmuir, who made his fortune in coal and rail, and also served as Premier and Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Over the years, it was a centre of social and business life in the area.
The estate was eventually sold to the federal government in the late 1930s, conditional upon it always being used for educational purposes. It became known as Royal Roads Military College, where a great many graduates went on to become leaders in the armed forces and the corporate world. It was declared a National Historic Site of Canada, and after being decommissioned by the military in 1995, it became Royal Roads University.
The castle is surrounded by acres of formal gardens and faces south, looking over a lagoon and the ocean waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains of Washington State.
One of it’s more unusual uses was to act as the site of the mutant’s school in the X-Men movie series.
