Artist's Description

St. James Anglican Church is one of the famous “Churches of Mahone Bay” that have brought this little Nova Scotia town so much popularity over the years. The town was founded in 1754 and this church was built in 1885. It still has the original colour scheme, and is a Victorian Gothic design by William C. Harris (1854-1913). Mahone Bay has a population of approximately 1,000 and is 60 miles along the south coast from Halifax, accessed by either Highway 3, the Lighthouse Route, which follows along the twists and curves of the coastline and is a very scenic drive, or via trunk highway 103 which cuts mostly through the woods and saves a lot of travel time. The town is noted for high quality crafts, great seafood and very friendly people, many of them direct descendants of the original founding families. The waters of Mahone Bay provide great boating and sailing, and the bay contains 365 islands.
Taken with a Sony DSCF828 camera, October 10, 2006.

Placed in the top ten of Canadian Historical and Pioneer Site’s first ever challenge “Historical Canadian Churches and Cathedrals”
