This afternoon (March 8, 2009) we went for a walk in Summit Park, a small municipal park on top of a rocky hilltop in Saanich, Vancouver Island. The park is full of Garry Oaks, the only oak trees native to British Columbia. They go by other names ( White oak,Oregon oak, Pacific Post oak, Western White oak, Brewer oak, and Shin oak,and are members of the Beech family.Their main characteristic is their gnarled branches and sometimes twisted trunks. They’d look great in a horror movie! Oh yes, they also have both male and female flowers on the same tree. Very efficient!
Underneath is a carpet of blue, purple and white crocus which are now out in abundance all over the southern end of the Island.
