Artist's Description

It’s hard to imagine a world where prayers, poultices and penances were once the standard treatments for bacterial infections. Back then, your best bet for sepsis, pneumonia or STIs was simply to endure and hope for the best.

By the mid 1800s, the biology of bacterial infection was fairly well understood but it wasn’t until the 1930s that arresting and reversing bacterial infection came within the reach of health professionals. Even then, the available sulfa drugs were of limited benefit.

Penicillin changed all that. Alexander Fleming’s remarkable discovery was a truly momentous moment, notwithstanding that it took the skills and commitment of Dr. Howard Florey, Dr. Ernst Chain and Dr. Norman Heatley plus another decade to bring the miracle of antibiotics into common use.

As an oral medication it changed medicine, pharmacology and global perceptions of healthcare.

TIME STAMPS
How better to signify commemoration than in the style of a postage stamp?

The Momentous Moments collection is about ingenuity. It denotes moments when clever, inventive and original thinking have significantly shaped our world.
