Artist's Description

Box office of the Regent – the movie theatre was built in 1929. Attempts were made in the 1970’s to demolish it to make way for progress.
A Save the Regent movement got underway, ably assisted by the Builders Labourers Federation, with Norm Gallagher, a Marxist-Leninist, as its’ state secretary. The BLF banned the demolition of the theatre.
(I’ve heard, perhaps unreliably, that Mr Gallagher’s mother had been an usherette at the theatre).
Victorian Premier Rupert Hamer ensured the survival of the Regent in 1977, his government passing legislation for its protection. The old style venue, in the heart of the city, now hosts musicals.
