Artist's Description

this is the happiest girl I saw during a visit to China covering several weeks a few years ago. She was working as a hostess on a smal hover-craft which took us out and landed on a build up of silt in the Yellow River.
As we met a few of the locals who seem to live on these islands of silt, she plaited the mane on the horse – as happy as any young woman on a days outing anywhere in the West. This was a huge contrast to the demeanour of other Chinese girls we’d seen, working in restaurants, factories and museums. Perhaps she had the ideal job – freedom to talk to travellers from interesting places, and not afflicted by the grinding work schedule imposed by Chinese managers. In truth, many in the West don’t appear to have her love of life.
