Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all those who celebrate it. Even if you don’t, it’s nice to have a day just to give thanks for what we’ve been blessed with.

Image Use

If any of you group leaders want to use this image for your group as a “Featured” button, let me know and I can put whatever text you want in there and email it to you.

Huge Sale

This was not a RB sale, rather a special custom image my client wanted of one of my images, here’s how it looked on their wall. I took the shot here in Arizona a couple years ago with my old camera and my friend helped me get it to look good enlarged to 60×40 on canvas. It’s nice to have happy clients.

Image Replaced

Guys I kinda messed up. I recently posted Maui Rocks, and realized I had already posted it a coiple weeks ago and you commented on it a lot. What I did was replaced the original image with this one, so I hope you still like it.

Maui Flowing Surf

I this this one is better than the first.

Facebook

Did any of you guys get this Facebook message? Seems like a hoax.

Facebook is recently becoming very overpopulated, there have been many members complaining that Facebook is becoming very slow. Records show that the reason is that there are too many non-active Facebook members and, on the other side, too many new Facebook members.

We will be sending this message around to see if members are active or not. If you are active please send to at least 15 other users using Copy+ Paste to show that you are still active. Those who do not send this message within 2 weeks will be deleted without hesitation to create more space.

Send this message to all your friends and to show me that you’re still active and you will not be deleted.

My Birthday Today

Well another year has passed for me and I can only thank the Lord for His many blessings this year. We have managed to dodge the economic bullet so far and things are going pretty good, actually. Our health is good, kids are doing fine, grandkids are growing like weeds, life is good. Yeah, we’ve had some bad things happen this year just like everyone, I’m sure. For now I prefer to focus on the good and stay excited at what the Lord has in store for next year. It really doesn’t do any good to worry about the bad stuff. It’s not good for your health or the people around you.

Anyhow, thanks for reading this and maybe, just maybe it’ll help you to cope.

Cheers…G>

Bulk Edits

I don’t see the value of Bulk Edits since you can only modify certain fields. I’d like to be able to bulk edit tags, for example. Being able to bulk edit groups your work is on would be helpful too, but may be problematic for group hosts.

What are your thoughts?

Abstract Art

I have been talking to some gallery owners regarding abstract art, and the sale-ability of it. I’d like to hear your experiences and thoughts. Most of what I hear is that abstract art is very difficult to sell, especially in a small format. One person said customers like to look at abstract art, but don’t see it in their homes.

I, like many artists, enjoy making this type of art because it allows you to express yourself more freely and it’s fun. Most of us like to sell our art too. So, there’s the dilemma in my mind. It’s fun to make, but if it doesn’t sell, what’s the point other than enjoyment of doing something you like to do?

Artscow

I have discovered Artscow.com.

I have had a number of prints done there and the prices are low and quality is great. Shipping is a little slow, but it’s cutting my print costs in half. So, check it out.

Vacation

Well guys I need a vacation from retirement…lol……

So, my wife and I are headed for Maui next Wednesday for 8 days. I’m sure most of you have been there, we have over a dozen times. I hope to come back with some amazing images. The last time we went in 2006 I didn’t have my Xti, and we were sick with food poisoning most of the time. I won’t be visiting RB until we get back so thanks in advance for your comments.

If there is any particular place you can recommend for photo ops, drop me a bmail and I’ll check it out. I particularly like what they call the Up-Country where there are spectacular views, not to mention the Haleakala Crater crater. Of course there’s the sunsets to die for which I’ll have, the beach scenes, flowers, animals, Maui has it all including some of the best weather on the

Sizing

Guys… I’ve been going back to look at some of my posts to see how the card version looked and realized that I was cutting off part of what I wanted to show do to RB formatting(UGH). I have replaced them so the card version would come out as nice as the prints, just in case someone may want to buy one.

You may want to check some of yours.

Guys…kenpics may be having problems with the latest Firefox upgrade 3.5… I have been using 3.0.13 with no problems….

has anyone else upgraded and had problems?

How Much To Show

I always debate on how much artwork to leave here on RB. Right now I have 13 pages, which I think is a lot. I’ve deleted at least that much in the two years I’ve been here. Is it really a lot?…

When you look at older posts you’ll probably see that there is not much action. So, what’s the point in leaving them there if nobody is looking? That’s the age old question. We’ll, I think you have to be the judge of that. Just as soon as I think about removing stuff someone buys something.

After all, what’s that harm in leaving them there even though nobody is looking? I would say if they are old posts and have not had a satisfactory amount of views, or sales, then you should consider removing them. I have posts that have had hundreds of views, but no comments for a long time. So, why remove them?

Gallery Showing

Guys.. I’m so excited, just had to share. My art work was one or over 200 entries juried in for a new gallery showing. The judging was tough and the competition stiff. They only accepted one piece for the show of mine, but at least I’m in.

Photoshop Tip

Want to easily turn you images into coloring book pages. This works most of the time. Work with a copy of your background layer, desaturate it, duplicate that layer, invert, blending change to color dodge, gaussian blur and set radius to desired level. That’s it.

Here is a sample.

Photoshop Tip

You may like this useful tip I learned today. Did you know the RAW importer for Photoshop can also work with JPEGs? It’s true! Go set that up in your Photoshop preferences under Edit; Preferences; File Handling, and select Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files.

Now, go ahead and open the JPG in Photoshop. The dialog you see here is the RAW importer for Photoshop. It is very nice because it has these wonderful sliders. You can select Auto, or play with the sliders. Once you’re happy with your selections select Open Image which will close the importer and bring the results into Photoshop control where you can make further adjustments.

Play with it, as I will, to see if it gives you more control over your final results and produces more stunning images.

Let me know what you think.

Dancing Bubble People

I know this isn’t RB art, but I just had to share. I created this 10 second animation using Photoshop and Windows Live Movie Maker to add the music. Think of the possibilities…..

Back from Vacation

Criticism

Read this quote today.

“Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.”

It gave me a laugh….:)

The Rest of the story

Well here are your comments in this thread.…

http://www.redbubble.com/people/gemlenz/journal...

As you can see there is some disillusionments with RB, poeple are busy and since sales is low, a lot of you have moved on and are concentrating efforts in other areas. That is perfectly understandable. I’m glad to find out it’s not me, rather a combination of things contributing to the slowness on RB. I in fact am guilty of the same things.

So, what do we do? I have a wild suggestion. If each of us bought something from one other artist that would help the morale and perhaps ignite some enthusiasm among us. Even if just once in awhile we purchased something from another artist it would make it all worth it.

I also think RB can do more to promote outside t

Calendar

Well forget it… there’s no way to create next year’s calendar…so I’ll hide my new one until RB support wakes up….:(

That really sucks!!!

Update on Me

Well, thought I’d give you an update on the progress of my business. The past two months have shown profits, and this month is looking good as well. With the summer months coming here in Arizona, it’ll be slow, but I have a little steam to keep my revenue stream going.…

I’ve been getting a number of commission jobs from leads at my art shows. I offer two new services: logo design and real estate photography. Both are showing promise of future sales. I have started a new product line called cubicle art. These are 8×10 canvas prints that folks can buy and are ready to hang on the wall. I can sell these pretty inexpensive and still make a decent profit. We’ll see how that goes, but other artists I know have had some success in this area, and I have a friend that does a great job doing the pri

Why Red Bubble?

Did you ever ask yourself why you use Red Bubble? I have, and here’s my thoughts. Originally, I joined to have a place to show my work online on a premier photo site, and to see what others thought of my photography. By getting feedback, I was able to learn and improve my photography. Occasionally, someone would actually buy one of my pieces, and of course, it was exciting.…

After over a year and a half I am re-accessing my motives for being here. RB seems to have become more of a social network of other artists, and not really a place where you can actually sell your work. In recent weeks I have had a big push and submitted a lot of different pieces. The responses have been pretty much from the same handful of people. I do appreciate the views and comments, but frankly they are not helpin

Pencils placed in top 10 in this Challenge

At least there is some excitement…. this is my most viewed image, with over 1,800 views…

There is also a poster version Here that has almost 600 views….

thx for the support.

Where Is Everybody?

This past week has been the least amount of activity I’ve seen on Red Bubble since I joined 18 months ago. My watch list continues to grow and receive very few views and comments from the same few people, which are appreciated of course, don’t get me wrong.

Is it me or……?

Just wondering where everybody is…..

Baby Series

I have made my Baby Series available as cards that can add any text you want before you buy it. I will just create another one just for you. So, let me know if you are interested.

thx…

The value of a newsletter

For those of you who are serious about selling your artwork, be sure to make up a monthly newsletter letting people know what you are doing, in terms of where you are showing, selling, special sales, etc. It can pay off. It doesn’t have to be exotic, just something simple. It puts your name in front of people.…

I had a potential client who gave me his card over a year ago. I added him to my monthly newsletter. Low and behold, he contacted me last week for a photo shoot. I know this will lead to additional business, as he is involved in the entertainment business and has a lot of contacts. He is also using me as his official sponsor for his band. He specifically mentioned that he sees my newsletter each month and did not forget about me.

It pays to advertise…..:-)

Photoshop Tip

Some of you may already know this, but I discovered a cool PS tip. Next time you are working with contrast adjustments, change the layer blend mode to luminosity. You’ll avoid undesired shifts in color and saturation.
