Artist's Description

comment from a geologist friend:

“They are layers of fine-grained sedimentary rocks, weathered out by especially high tides, plus wind and rain. The colour differences are caused by the weathering, too, with oxidation of some of the minerals in the rocks: pyrite, for instance.

These rocks are in the tidal zone, so they are being wave abraded, which is a pretty quick way of weathering.

Near the big trees on the beach at East Wynyard you can find where lava has flowed over the beach and picked up the beach pebbles".
