Obviously smaller than the female this very fast and efficient hunter is seen here after devouring a juvenile or female Common Redpoll. Some of the Redpoll’s feathers can still be seen on the branch.
The male Merlin is about the same length as a Bluejay but more than double the weight and the Merlin’s wingspan is 24 inches vs the Jay’s 16 inches
