Artist's Description

At 10 inches in length and weighing in at 2.3 ounces this songbird is quite a little hunter and preys on insects, small mammals and birds.Note the hooked beak for tearing apart their prey.. They are known to hang their prey on thorns or barbed wire for later consumption.

I had seen one one February morning while watching Great Grey Owls in Cumberland On. I then saw one at the Nortel complex in the West of Ottawa. Later in the day I was in my yard sitting still and watching two Common Redpols in the snow below a feeder when they all of a sudden froze. I knew then that a predator was in the area and probably in the trees behind me. I did not expect to see a shrike for the third time in the same day….The Northen Shrike landed on this stick just inches from the redpolls as they took off. I got two shots and the Shrike exited at the sound of my camera…
