Artist's Description

A very fast insect eater ( on the fly) and these birds can be seen in fields and along waterways where they often fly just above the water to take insects. I love the dark metallic blues in the feathers and the graceful lines in this species. They nest in cavities in trees and in fence posts…

Canon 30D and 400F5.6L lens were used The 400m is well known for its fast AF and is considered by many to be the in flight lens especially when combined with a pro body ( I wish) …

ISO was 320 and SS was 1/1600 sec at F5.6. Important note: I noticed this bird coming in and eying a female who was perched near a bluebird house. He would slow down as he called to her and then check the bluebird house. I watched him do this a few times and then preset my focus on the B House, then tried picking up the bird about 20 feet before he reached the female and panned him as he approached her and the B B House. I got several shots over the 5 or 6 times he did this
