Much better viewed large
Not sure where or how this bird got its name. They are runners and if you get close to their nest one will surely make it seem like it has a broken wing to try and draw you (the would be predator) away from the eggs.

Beautiful shot, Gary! According to A Field Guide to the Birds of North America (Michael Vanner), the “name echoes its kill-deeah call”.
Thanks Mike and a big thanks for the information on the naming;:-)
What an unusual name for a bird, great capture
I thought so too :-) Thanks Kelly!
Very nice low angle PoV..Great DoF giving excellent sharpness & detail throughout!
Gary this is exceptional! Instant fave, no hesitation! Isn’t their injury dance something else? Unfortunately for them, it alerts humans of a nearby nest… and you know us, we can’t help but look for it. :)
Hi Lee-Anne…..the injury dance is very cool but you are right ..it alerts humans to the reality of a nearby nest and we did see two nests. Brlliant camouglage but right out in the open…got to be very careful walking around. I witnessed two males a couple of moths ago fight over a female. At one point I thought it was going to be to the death with one pushing the other under the water,,,the one who lost looked pretty bad with many feathers missing as he flew off. The female watched from the sidelines…..
Stunning capture Gary!! A difficult bird to capture and you have nailed this one!!
Thanks Blair and after several years of getting mediocre shots of this species I have to say i am happy with this one and a few others I got at this site :-)
Great shot. Love those big eyes. Brenda
Many thanks Brenda..yes the eyes are gorgeous on this species..
excellent capture Gary, I usually look for the nest so I know where not to walk, I would hate to accidentally step on the eggs
Thanks Mike …I hear you and we did find the two nests.. I will have to check them in the coming days to see if any tiny Kildeer energe:-) Bubblemail if you are interested…….
Wow! This completely amazing. Gorgeous color and detail. Excellent find.
Thanks so much :-)
Very nice shot. They call their own name as they run.
Thanks Kay and thanks for that as well…I will have to pay more attention to their call .
I saw two of these today, doing the broken wing routine. Beautiful!
Thanks Kim…the broken wing routine is quite the strategy..quite unique I think.
