Artist's Description

The volcano of doom. Not long after midnight Earth time, “Zhang Heng 1” passed over the volcano of doom and took this photograph (one of several thousand). As you can see the crater extends down through the permanently frozen atmosphere of the planetoid, well into its rocky mantle. In it’s heyday it’s eruption must have been a sight to behold probably visible from Earth itself, spewing a great arcing plume of magma thousands of kilometres into the icy void of interplanetary space. For now it lies dormant, or is it?
As Probe Commander, I now have to make the life and death decision to lead a landing party, if scans prove it will be relatively safe. Our mission is to find life, but I think we all secretly hope we don’t.
