Artist's Description

My theory on photographing dance performance revolves around a few issues.

Firstly, something must be still and in focus (in this case, the dancer’s right foot). This gives a reference point for the movement elsewhere in the image, and shows that the photographer got it technically right.

Secondly, dancers occupy space in transition from one space to another. I like to show where the dancer came from, or where they are going to, so compositionally I often place them on the edge of the frame. It is supposed to parallel the way a dancer uses the frame of the stage to move around in. In the still image, they exist within a larger performance space, too.

I try to convey the intensity and energy of the dance, too. Movement blur, facial expressions, the tension of a body can all do this.

I just hope it all owrks!
