Artist's Description

Queensland Railways Heritage Fleet BB18 1/4 No. 1079 waiting and with safety valve blowing off.

The BB 181/4 was the last class of steam locomotive introduced into Queensland Railways in the 1950’s. This loco’s sister No.1089 was the last steam locomotive introduced into service in Australia. No.1030 was the last official locomotive to run to a timetable at the close of steam in December, 1969 when diesel locos finally took over statewide.

These 4-6-2 Pacific’s were popular with drivers and affectionately known as Betty’s. They saw service as mainline passenger and freight locomotives.

Five examples of this locomotive survive. 2 with QR, 1 in a museum in Winton (Outback Queensland), 1 in Mackay (under restoration) and 1 at Zig-Zag Railway at Lithgow New South Wales.
