Artist's Description

This is wild flax (Linum perenne) photographed March 27 at Sun City in Georgetown, Texas during strong winds. I was amazed that I hit the exact moment the flower stopped all motion and achieved such clarity in this image.

Wild Blue Flax is a light, airy plant with lacy, narrow, blue-green leaves topped by a cloud of delicate, sky-blue flowers that dance in the slightest breeze. Each flower lasts only one day. By afternoon, the petals are falling off and a new blossom will open the following day.

A 2-3 foot perennial with delicate leaves and true blue sky flowers from Mar. to Sept..Its natural habitat is dry, open prairie meadows, dry hillsides, and roadsides. A good garden flower. Showy, every morning it covers itself with 1" blue flowers, hundreds per day. The leaves themselves stay at 18" or so but the flowers arise above making a total arching display 3’ or so high. Use in perennial garden, rock garden, or even in a container.
