Artist's Description

On a warm spring day, this honey bee (Apis mellifera) gently touched down on the surface of shallow water and took a long drink. Many bees visited this spot through the afternoon. Especially at higher temperatures, desiccation can be a critical problem for insects. Methods for dealing with water loss include being near bodies of water—explaining why so many insects are found around ponds and streams—and also to be most active during periods of high humidity.
