Artist's Description

A recently emerged Pacific forktail (Ischnura cervula) rests quietly on a grass stem. With time, as this damselfly matures, the lighter-colored patches will transform into a vivid blue. These “immatures” tend to have a hesitant flight, as if they are unsure about how to make everything work. They also tend to fly for just short distances, often to the nearest perch that offers a chance to blend into the surroundings. A grass stem, a leaf, or a twig. New damselflies are highly vulnerable to predation—even from other, more mature and experienced damsels. Seeking a good spot to hide while the new exoskeleton hardens is conducive to survival.
